September 2002

Lockport 2002

The Lockport event this year was a great event with great weather! The 64th showed up in record numbers. There were 17 civilians and 24 infantry attending the two-day event for a total of 41 members in attendance. It was great seeing so many “Sharpshooters” on the field as we had one of the largest companies in attendance. Our civilians dominated the pie baking contents as the Federals did the battlefield, winning many of the prizes. It would be great to see even more members attend the Minooka event as our own Capt. Bob runs it.

Remaining Events for 2002

We have a number of events and one-day programs to fill out what’s remaining of the 2002 season. The remaining events are:

Belvidere fundraiser: September 28-29

This is a fundraising event where the unit sells fry bread at a living history event [Autumn Pioneer Festival] in Belvidere, IL. The more members we have the easier it is for everyone at the event. Bring your family as there is quite a bit going on at this event with living history participants from a number of eras present. Great for the kids! We’ll use the money from selling the fry bread to purchase new unit flags and possibly other gear the unit can use. Directions: Off I-90 exit on Genoa Rd., take a right on Genoa Rd., continue on Genoa which will turn into Bypass 20, continue of Bypass 20 which will take you to Belvidere; at the fifth stoplight in Belvidere turn right [south] on Appleton Rd., watch for signs from there.

Woodcutting: October 5

We will be cutting and splitting wood all day at Minooka in preparation for the event later that month. We have cut a lot of wood so far but to make this event a success we need to cut even more. If you can come out for only part of a day we could use your help.

Round Rolling Party: October 6

Dave Wirtz has volunteered his house for a round rolling party. It’s great fun as well as useful, as we all tend to buy our rounds from the 64th company store. Should start about 4 pm. If you are coming call Dave to get directions at (630) 554-2966.

Minooka Re-enactment: October 18-20

Certainly the finest event in Northern Illinois and run by our own Capt. Bob. This is a must attend for all members. Hope to see everyone there.

Christmas party: December 7

Our annual party with more details in the next newsletter.

Flags of the 64th

The unit is currently obtaining bids to construct a new national flag. The monies from Belvidere we hope will go toward a new regimental flag in the future.

64th Illinois Infantry Regimental Flag Summary: Unfortunately, the central portion of this 34 star regimental flag is missing. However the inscription remains and reads “PRESENTED by the GOVERNOR, RICHARD YATES 1st Battalion, Yates Sharp Shooters. ILL. VOL.”

64th Illinois Infantry National Flag Summary: This 34 star flag carries no inscriptions. The rectangular canton with seven horizontal rows of stars is typical of flags manufactured by Longley & Brother of Cincinnati.
